Seventeenth Annual Kansas Voices Contest
for Writers Living in Kansas

Prizes:

  • Adult Division: $275 best poem, $275 best short story
  • Youth Division: $75 best poem, $75 best short story Honorable Mentions: $200 total

    Deadline: Postmarked by March 15, 2006

    Eligibility: Entrants must live in Kansas. There is no requirement for subject matter. Writers competing in the Youth Division must be under 18 or currently enrolled in high school.

    Entries: Unpublished poetry or short story competition. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but writers must notify us immediately if an entry has been accepted elsewhere. No single entry may be longer than 20 pages. All entrants will be notified of the contest winners.

    Judging: Entries will be judged entirely on literary merit. Past judges have been Gar Bethel, Troy Boucher, Denise Low, Janet Peery, Stephen Trapscott, Natalie L. Petesch, Judy Vollmer, Liza Field, Tony Sobin, Rawdon Tomlinson, Frank Parman, Essie Sappenfield, Tom Page, Brian Dietrich, Anna Seaton Huntington Judith Zaccaria, John Jenkinson, Tom Averill, Joan Spilman, Stephen Meats, Gordon Houser, William Sheldon, Debra Seely, William Coleman, Kerry Jones, Amy Fleury, Kathleen DeGrave.

    Winners: Winners will be notified by April 7, 2006 and will be honored and invited to read at a special presentation. The reading will be held at Winfield Chamber Office in Winfield, during Kanza Days, April 29, 2006 Winning entries may be published by the Kansas Voices contest, however, writers retain all rights.

    Manuscripts: Manuscripts will not be returned. Do not send your only copy. Type entries on one side only of 8? x 11 inch white paper. Poems may be single spaced, but prose must be double-spaced and at least 12 pt. Clear photocopies are acceptable. A copy of the completed entry form must accompany the entries. Titles of all works entered must be listed on the entry form. The writer's name must not appear on the manuscripts.

    Entry Fee: $3 for each poem or prose submission. Authors may enter as many times as they wish in either category. A $20 fee will be charged for all checks returned NSF. Sponsored by:
