Oscar Micheaux's aunt, Harriet Micheaux, married Napoleon Robinson. This
"exoduster" couple is buried south of Great Bend at Eden Valley Cemetery in Stafford
County, Kansas. All of Oscar Micheaux's relatives who currently live in the Great Bend
area are descendants of Harriet and Napoleon Robinson.
The tombstone to the left marks the graves of Oscar's grandmother, Melvina Micheaux,
and his Uncle, William Micheaux, who migrated to Kansas in 1878. William Micheaux was
a bachelor who took care of his mother after her husband, David Micheaux, was sold
to Texas slaveowners, never to be heard from again. After her son, William died, Grandma Micheaux, along with Oscar's sister,
Ollie, joined Oscar in South Dakota to make homestead claims. Both later
returned to the Great Bend area, living at 1620 Morton. The house that
Ollie and her husband Frank Robinson built still stands.
Napolean Robinson was born near Paducah, Kentucky. He crossed the Ohio
River many times to Metropolis, Illinois, where he met the Micheaux's. He married
Harriette Micheaux in 1870, and they migrated to Stafford County, Kansas in 1881.
Harriett and Napolean had 5 girls and 7 boys.
