Bell and Veatrice Michaux

Oscar's mother, Bell, and sister, Veatrice, share this tombstone in the Great Bend cemetery. Veatrice was murdered in her early 20's by a jealous suitor while she was on a date with another man.

Veatrice was murdered on May 11, 1915 in Pueblo, Colorado by a jealous suitor while she was on a date with another man. She was in Pueblo, staying with her sister, Ida. She died on May 18, 1915. According to the Pueblo Chieftain newspaper:

Beatrice (sic) Micheaux, colored, is in St. Mary's hospital, probably dying as a result of a bullet through the stomach said by the police to have been inflicted by Arthur Norman, also colored, in a jealous rage at 12 o' clock last night. Another suitor found in company with the woman was fired upon four times, but escaped injury...The girl had been to a picture show with an escort and her assailant had concealed himself in a clump of bushes near the home of Mrs. L.G. Payne, with whom Miss Micheaux was living. When the pair passed the bushes he suddenly sprang forth and began firing. The girl fell shot through the stomach, her escort ran, and escaped injury despite a rain of bullets sent after him."
