When the Barton County Arts Council acquired the former McCoy Shoe Store at 1401 Main, the property included another small storefront on Forest Street. The shoe store had used it as a storage room. Before that, it had housed a military recruiting office.

The Arts Council sees this room as a potential multi-purpose room. With a small portable stage, it can house cozy music events: chamber music, jazz ensembles, singer/songwriters and similar “coffeehouse” acts.

With some portable tables, the room will also provide a venue for small art classes.

The Crest Theatre was chosen as the main venue for the Oscar Micheaux Festival on March 24-25, 2001. In order to provide options for those attending that event, it was decided to use the Arts Center's back room as a venue for the showing of films by Micheaux and other black artists.

The scheduling of that use of the room provided the impetus to restore the room to at least a reasonably presentable state. Much of the carpentry and other work was donated by Chuck and Char Brown. Then March 11th was declared a work day for the painting of the room. These pictures show many of those who volunteered their services that day.
